Commissioned by Dubai Culture for SIKKA Art Fair 2019

Seth’s work is inspired by textile traditions from around the world, including Batik from Indonesia, Shipibo from the Peruvian Amazon, and mandalas that embellish saris in South Asia. As a pianist, he is particularly drawn to these traditions for their musical focus – gongs, chants, and hymns have all played a part in their creation. Inspired by the theme of Tolerance, the artist returns home to find inspiration in the windows and facades in the Al Fahidi Historic District. Each symbol seen on these canvases is ripe with the cultural and religious history of the UAE, and acts both literally and figuratively as a window to reflect an Open Window to Tolerance.

This sculpture was created using a combination of physical manipulation of the material, photogrammetry, and 3D­editing software, namely Remake, Meshmixer, 123D Make, and Fusion 360. Sheets of corrugated cardboard were cut using a laser cutter, and approximately 400 elements were assembled using superglue.
